Learn Korean: 걸리다 VS 들다
The verbs 걸리다 and 들다 take
more than one meaning depending on the context. 걸리다 can
mean 'to be hung' or 'to get sick' and 들다 can
mean 'to get into' or 'to pick up'. Aside from that, they carry another meaning
which is common to both of them and that is used to express how much time or
money is involved in doing an action. In English, we say something like it
takes or costs… to do something.
We use 걸리다 when
expressing how much time is required and 들다 when
expressing how much money is required. To complete the pattern, we attach them
to –는 데 in the case of verbs and –아/어/여 지는데 in
the case of adjectives. Let’s take a look at the formation and some sample
sentences.
