Learn Korean: Time + 에

Let’s take a look at the Korean sentence pattern Time + . The particle is not only attached to places but time as well. With this, we can make time phrases such as a day, a week, a month, etc. There are many ways to say these periods of time in Korean, but only one fits this usage. We use 하루 for day, 주일 for week,  for month, and  for year. This is pretty tricky because Sino-Korean is used in one, and Pure-Korean is used in another. To make it simple, we say 하루에, 일주일에, 한 달에, and 일년에 respectively. Sino-Korean is used in week and year and Pure-Korean is used in day and month. There is a Sino-Korean way to say 하루 and that is 일 일, but it less common than the former. We can use them in a variety of sentences.

하루에 몇 시간 자?

How many hours do you sleep a day?

집세는 한 달에 얼마야?

How much is the house rent a month?

일년에 한국에 몇 번 가?

How many times do you go to Korea per year?
